Mindfulness-Based Well-Being

We are all works-in-progress, including Loretta, me, and the offerings we create and share at Thought Kitchen. Over the past year we have been in deep discernment about how what we know, practice, and teach goes together and how to make it as accessible as possible. Friend, this was HARD WORK, especially for two recovering perfectionists who want to make sure everything is just right before sharing it.

Iterating

I've written about iterating before, and it's the practice that helps move me out of still working on it to iteration complete. Iterating is a very supportive practice for this recovering perfectionist. Iteration is why there's Thought Kitchen, this blog post, and our offerings.

Over the autumn and winter, Loretta and I, like many of our more than human kin, were engaged in quiet, not-obvious-to-others activity. For instance, we figured out that what we teach is Mindfulness-Based Well-Being, which we call MBWB.

We decided that putting together the mindfulness lessons in the Kitchen Essentials program with the basics of the Seven Dimensions of Well-Being program made sense to us because we believe deeply that mindfulness is the foundation of well-being practice. We combined these topics and created Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Well-Being.

Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Well-Being
Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Well-Being is a seven-day program that enables people who are “well-being curious” to get a taste of Thought Kitchen’s mindfulness-based well-being framework and practices.

Inspired by the format and length of Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, also called MBSR, we developed the next program for those who are hungry for more after the Intro program, Mindfulness-Based Well-Being.

Mindfulness-Based Well-Being
Mindfulness-Based Well-Being is a nine-week program that supports you in establishing a regular mindfulness meditation practice to support your deeper engagement with the Seven Dimensions of Well-Being.

Why Now and Why You

In the Western culture I live and work in, January 1 is often touted as the right time to begin something new. Where I live in the Northern Hemisphere, January 1 is near the beginning of winter, when it's cold and more dark than light. The trees and animals here are engaged in rest and/or quieter activity. For Loretta and me, our quieter activity this winter included creating and editing content, including audio and video. Along with spring this year came publishing and now telling you about these first two offerings in our Mindfulness-Based Well-Being Pathway program.

The other thing that came along with the change of season is our continuing observation that collectively, HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOT OK. The rate of change, uncertainty, and divisive discourse adds to the load we're each carrying as we navigate our lives. My mindfulness-based well-being practice supports me in navigating all of this with more ease, and I want to support you in developing your own mindfulness-based well-being practice.

MBWB can help you if you are feeling any (or all) of the following:

  • overwhelmed

  • exhausted

  • the life you want to live is out of reach

  • you have no choice about how you spend your time

  • you would practice mindfulness if you knew how

  • you would love to be part of a community

  • time is of the essence

I get it -- mindfulness and well-being can be ethereal and feel out of reach. That's why we have operationalized mindfulness and well-being into Mindfulness-Based Well-Being. Both are skills that can be learned and developed, just like you learned to walk and speak.

IT'S GO TIME, friend. Are you coming or not?
